MARY’S JOURNEY

fourth week of Advent

This fourth week of Advent has me reflecting on Mary’s wondrous journey of unexpected pregnancy. I think of how scared she must have been and alone she must have felt when no one believed her including Joseph. I imagine her packing up her things and preparing for the long journey to Elizabeth and Zachariah’s house leaving the Holy Spirit to defend her and make things right, which it does, as we hear in today’s Gospel reading. The angels speak to Joseph in his dream changing his position, but Mary didn’t know that as she traveled those roads on that long journey. I always imagined her singing this beautiful song below to God on her way. Every Christmas I reflect on them and imagine myself as Mary singing this to God as a form of lectio divina to try and get closer to her and understand her better as a chosen vessel and mother. Amy Grant cowrote the song and every Christmas I share it with as many people as I can. As you read these words you will know why I love it so much.

I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I’ve done
Holy Father, You have come
And chosen me now to carry Your Son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now, be with me now

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy
Breath of Heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one should have had my place?
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of Your plan
Help me be strong, help me be, help me

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy
Breath of Heaven, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven

Recently I saw this video of the song and it wasn’t as I imagined it at all and perhaps it is more appropriate. Judge for yourself and enjoy this special time as a Christian waiting for our Savior to be born.
